Europe’s a big place and temperatures vary dramatically in the winter. Some European countries are cold and snowy like a picture-perfect Christmas postcard but others are fantastic for a spot of winter sun. If you’re in need of a sunshine-filled luxury getaway, check out this list of European winter sun destinations for inspiration.
It’s no secret that I absolutely adore Greece, especially the stunning island of Santorini. The Greek islands enjoy year-round sunshine and although winter is definitely the low season, the weather remains fairly warm. It’s too cold to swim in the ocean (unless you’re brave) but you certainly won’t be seeing any snow, either. Besides, you can enjoy gorgeous caldera views from the warmth of a private heated pool in your luxe villa. And really, what could be better than that? Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the best Canary Islands to visit during the winter. They enjoy distinctly warmer temperatures than Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and just six days of rain per month.
When it comes to choosing between the two islands, go for Gran Canaria if you’re after tranquility and natural beauty. Tenerife, on the other hand, is the clear choice for those who love nightlife, dining out and meeting new people.
Winter average temperatures: 15-21°C / 57-70°F
Some of the best beaches in Europe can be found in Portugal’s Algarve region. There’s also rich culture, lots of history and amazing (albeit spicy) food to enjoy. Head to Albufeira for gorgeous beaches and excellent nightlife or Lagos for dramatic coastline and a bustling town centre. Temperatures in the Algarve are slightly cooler than the Canary Islands and Santorini, but there are still many balmy days. Take a warm jacket just to be on the safe side.
Winter average temperatures: 8-17°C / 46-62°F
Cyprus enjoys some of the warmest winter temperatures in Europe. Its scenic beaches and bright blue waters make it a popular year-round destination. For history and photography lovers, there are many fascinating ancient ruins all over the island. Adventurous travelers, meanwhile, will love the nature trails, quad biking and even skiing on Mount Olympus – yes, really!
Winter average temperatures: 14-24°C / 57-75°F
Unsurprisingly, sunny Spain is one of the best winter sun destinations in Europe, particularly the southern half of the country. The city of Marbella is one of the best places for luxury travelers to get their vitamin D fix. It’s well-known for its upscale nightlife, well-maintained beaches, mouth-watering seafood and classy boutiques. There are plenty of exclusive resorts where you can kick back and relax. However, despite the balmy temperatures, it’s perhaps a little too cold to tan by the pool.
Winter average temperatures: 8-18°C / 46-64°F
