Microcurrent facials are the electrifying (pun intended) new beauty treatment that everyone’s talking about. What Do Microcurrent Facials Do?

A microcurrent facial means applying a conductive gel to your skin and then running a microcurrent device over your face. The device delivers a low voltage current to your skin which contracts your muscles giving you a defined, contoured look. It’s basically like taking your face to the gym for a workout!

On top of this, the electrical stimulation stimulates collagen and elastin production, resulting in firmer, plumper skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles. These results will continue to improve after the treatment and your skin texture will improve each time you perform a microcurrent facial.

As if that weren’t enough, microcurrent facials also improve blood circulation so that your skin cells receive more oxygen and vital nutrients. Furthermore, this treatment increases cell turnover, just like retinol. This helps with hyperpigmentation issues, fine lines and acne scarring.

A microcurrent facial usually takes from 5-12 minutes, depending on your device settings and skin care needs.

Do Microcurrent Facials Hurt?

Fortunately, microcurrent facials don’t hurt but they can be a little uncomfortable, especially on your forehead and around the delicate eye area. In fact, one of my favorite microcurrent devices comes with a separate setting for the eyes and lips to reduce discomfort – more on that below!

Are Microcurrent Facials Right For Me?

Microcurrent facials are great for most people, but you’re not suitable for this treatment if…

  • You’re pregnant
  • You have metal implants in your face
  • You have heart problems
  • You’ve had botox within the past two weeks
  • You have active acne

If you’re in any doubt, speak to your aesthetician before performing this treatment at home.

The Best At-Home Microcurrent Devices

Nuface Trinity

Nuface Trinity is one of the most popular microcurrent devices on the market, and with good reason. The complete kit comes with an ELE extension to painlessly plump your lips and improve the delicate skin under your eyes.

Foreo Bear

The Foreo Bear has to be the cutest microcurrent device on the market. It’s another solid choice with a track record of great results. You have to buy the conductive serum separately and Foreo offers its own version which has been specially designed for use with the Bear.

ZIIP OX

This is a professional grade device which, in addition to the benefits listed above, has antibacterial properties to treat and target acne. It works with the ZIIP Beauty mobile app which gives you access to a vast array of different settings which you can tailor to your specific skin care concerns. The app also contains lots of helpful information and tutorials to help you understand what’s best for your skin. The ZIIP OX also comes with a Crystal Gel conductive serum that doubles as a luxurious face mask, too.

How to Do a Microcurrent Facial At Home

Cleanse Your Skin

Remove your makeup and cleanse your skin before performing a microcurrent facial. Pat your face dry. Then, take the conductive gel and apply it all over your clean, dry skin.

Start Low and Slow

Microcurrent devices really do give your facial muscles a workout, so train them the same way you would in the gym. Start off using a low setting for a short amount of time and build up over time, just as you progressively overload your muscles in the gym.

Wear Sunscreen

The aftercare process for microcurrent facials is nice and simple but I definitely recommend applying sunscreen after this treatment. Microcurrent facials build up your collagen levels whilst sun exposure breaks down this protein, so don’t undo all of your progress by neglecting to apply your SPF!
