The Maldives is one of the most beautiful countries on Earth. Whilst relaxing on the beach and in your private villa are undoubtedly enjoyable, there are also many exciting experiences to be had on a luxury trip to the Maldives. Here are some of my favorite experiences in the Maldives to help you get the most out of your trip.

It’s not often you get the chance to see dolphins dancing through the ocean. At sunset, many resorts offer the chance to take a boat ride and glimpse these spectacular creatures in their natural habitat. There are no guarantees, unfortunately, but there are definitely worse things in life than a sunset cruise in the Maldives.
If you’ve ever wanted to get your diving licence, now is the time. All of the best resorts in the Maldives feature PADI diving centres where you can learn to dive like a pro. The country’s clear waters and spectacular reefs make it an ideal diving destination.
Nothing says “luxury” quite like enjoying a floating breakfast in an infinity pool in a gorgeous Maldivian villa. My breakfast at the presidential villa at Emerald Maldives featured champagne, ice cold coconuts, yogurt drinks and fresh pastries. It was beyond delicious.
If scuba diving is old news for you, why not try your hand at free diving? This activity will get your adrenaline pumping and really test your limits. Plus, you’ll enjoy much better views unencumbered by diving equipment. If you relish a challenge, I highly recommend giving free diving a go.
Well, of course. When you travel to a country that’s 99% water, you’ve got to go snorkelling! Many of the luxury resorts in the Maldives have in-house marine biologists who can give you an informative and eye-opening lesson about the country’s incredible marine life. Talk about a dream job…
Any kind of wine tasting is usually pretty great, but wine tasting at sunset in the ocean… well, that really takes the experience to the next level. On the last night of our girls’ trip to Emerald Maldives Resort and Spa we enjoyed wine and canapes as we paddled in the crystal clear waters and it truly was a perfect way to end our trip.
I’m sure jet skiing is on pretty much everyone’s bucket list, and the Maldives is the perfect place to do it. I’m yet to try it myself, but this is certainly a must-have experience for thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies who want to feel like James Bond.
There’s something so special and pure about an untouched sandbank in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It’s a surreal experience that travelers of all ages and abilities can enjoy.
Aspiring anglers can enjoy a fishing trip under the guidance of a local fisherman. For example, at Soneva Fushi, you can learn how to fish in a sustainable manner with Rocket, who knows all the best spots to cast your hook. If you’re lucky enough to catch anything, the chefs will be happy to prepare it for you so you can enjoy the fruit of your labors for dinner.
This is a less obvious Maldives experience, but one that I really enjoyed on my most recent trip to the Maldives. As discussed in this post, I was truly blown away by the eco-centre at the Soneva Fushi resort. As luxury resorts in the Maldives work to become more sustainable, increasing numbers of properties are offering bespoke eco-centre tours so that you can learn more about how they’re reducing their environmental impact.
Swimming with manta rays at Soneva Fushi was one of my all-time favorite experiences in The Maldives. I strongly recommend that you take the chance to swim alongside these beautiful, interesting and elegant creatures. It can be a little unnerving at first but manta rays aren’t dangerous to humans and I promise you that this will be an experience you’ll never forget.
Last but certainly not least, enjoying a spot of Maldivian dancing is a great way to connect with the local culture as you bust some moves. At Emerald Maldives resort, we overheard the drums on our way back to our villa after dinner and we were pulled in by the music. It was a fun end to the night. I highly recommend letting go of your self-consciousness and getting down, Maldivian style.
