Celebrities, they’re just like us! Hollywood stars love to dish out beauty secrets and some of it is pure gold, whilst other tips are garbage. Many stars are just naturally beautiful, but others work closely with dermatologists and estheticians to ensure that they look their best 24/7 and glean expert knowledge along the way. So how do you separate the wheat from the chaff? I’ve broken down my favorite celebrity beauty secrets to live by and listed five that you should avoid like the plague. Let’s start with the good advice.

Actress Cate Blanchett believes that “anything you can do to remove stress gives you a better glow” and says she indulges in massages as often as possible. So there you go – you have Ms. Blanchett’s express permission to get down to the spa and treat yourself to a relaxing massage. I’m big on gentle, Balinese style treatments myself. If you’ve read any of my skincare articles before, you’ll know that I’m always banging on about the importance of sunscreen. Around 80% of damage to your skin comes from the sun, so there’s really no point investing time and money into a good skincare routine if you’re not going to back it up with a good SPF lotion.
I think we can all agree that Jennifer Lopez is aging almost miraculously well – she looks as good in her 50s as she did in her 20s. Whilst I’m not convinced of her claims that she’s never had any botox or fillers whatsoever (and who cares if she has?!) there’s no doubt that she’s taken very good care of her skin.
JLo has always listed sunscreen as one of her top beauty secrets. In fact, she has been applying it religiously since her early 20s – in fact, she says that she’s never missed a day. It’s definitely working for her.
Many beauty lovers are put off by the greasy texture of sunscreen, but it’s possible to find great products that feel just like a light moisturizer. I’ve listed a few of my favorites below:
Beyonce’s makeup artist Sir John recommends applying an eye cream to the lips before going in with liner and lipstick. Beyonce is rumoured to have named one of her children after him, so his advice should be taken seriously. I was skeptical when I read this but… wow.
Eye cream is extra moisturising and so it really creates a smooth canvas so that the rest of your makeup looks flawless. Say goodbye to puckered-looking lips and crumbly lipstick! This CBD eye cream by Dr. Cannuka works perfectly for this.
Take it from a supermodel: skincare is worth investing in. If you’re working with a budget, prioritise skincare and foundation, and cut costs elsewhere. “You can get a less expensive mascara, you can get a less expensive lip gloss or nail polish, but anything that’s actually on your skin is worth investing in.” Amen!
These are some of my all-time favorite skin care products, but check out this article for more.
If you’ve always wanted cheekbones like Margot Robbie’s but genetics didn’t quite come through for you, there’s a solution: microcurrent facials.
A microcurrent facial involves applying a conductive gel to your skin and using a device to deliver a low voltage current to your skin. This causes your muscles to contract, instantly giving you a more defined and contoured look. It’s basically like taking your face to the gym, but with quicker results!
However, you will see improvements over time too. Microcurrent devices stimulate collagen production for smooth, firm skin and improve circulation for a healthier glow. Click here to read my guide on how to perform a microcurrent facial at home.
The online skincare community was left outraged after Gwenyth Paltrow shared her skin care secrets with Vogue. In the video, she claimed that she only uses sunscreen on the highest points of her face where “the sun really hits” and avoids using it all over in case of chemicals.
Gwenyth Paltrow is wonderful but let’s be clear: the sun is going to do far more damage to your skin than any chemical in your facial sunscreen lotion. It’s important to use sunscreen all over your face, on your neck and even your hands in order to prevent wrinkles, age spots and most importantly, skin cancer.
Lady Gaga is known for being outlandish in every sense of the word, so it’s no surprise that she ended up on this list of crazy celebrity skincare secrets. Gaga uses tape to lift her features and make her face look tighter each day. Each to their own, but I’d rather just go to my esthetician, use a microcurrent device or invest in a really good retinol, you know?
Singer Shawn Mendes says he never washes his face, which is pretty unhygienic but clearly works for him. However, he told fans “I meditate a lot. I think skin is very based on how you’re feeling. You could rub dirt on your face and if you’re happy, you won’t break out!”
Whilst I do believe that skin care requires a holistic approach and that your mental wellbeing does have a big impact on the rest of your body, good vibes won’t undo the damage of a bad skincare routine. Sorry Shawn. If only, right?
Serums and sunscreen? Yes, yes, yes. However, layering is incredibly important when it comes to your skincare routine. Your sunscreen should be the last skincare product you apply to your face, and then you should ideally wait around 20 minutes before applying makeup. Mixing your sunscreen with another product depletes its efficacy, and that’s not what you want.
Yes, you read that right. The beautiful Mrs. Beckham regularly has bird poop smeared all over her face in the name of beauty. Whilst she does look great, I can’t help but think that there are other ways of achieving beautiful skin.
