A MODERN GUIDE TO LIVING YOUR LIFE WELL

The Best At-Home Beauty Treatments That Will Save You a Trip to the Salon

Manicured nails

There’s no doubt about it: 2020 is officially the year of staying home. From home spa treatments to quarantine bangs, the closure of salons means there’s never been a better time to try at-home beauty treatments. Doing it yourself can actually be a lot of fun, and it’s easier than you might think. In this post, I’ll be sharing my favorite at-home beauty treatments so that you can stay home in style – and save a buck or two while you’re at it.

At-Home Facials

There’s nothing more relaxing than a good facial and they’re one of the easiest at-home beauty treatments to perform. Here’s a safe DIY routine that will leave you feeling like you’ve just walked out of the aesthetician’s office:

Step 1 – Exfoliate

I like to start my at-home facials with a good chemical exfoliation. It sounds a little scary, but chemical exfoliants are actually much gentler on the skin than physical scrubs. Start off with a low-strength product and see how your skin handles it.

A dropper bottle

For exfoliation newbies, I highly recommend a lactic acid treatment, such as the Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment. It’s a fairly gentle product but will leave you with a radiant, spa-fresh glow. As for the pros, I’m a huge fan of the Ordinary AHA 30% and BHA 2% Peeling Solution. This product is so popular that it’s almost always sold out, but trust me, it’s worth the wait to get your hands on this skincare superstar.

Step 2 – Face Mask

Follow up with a nourishing overnight face mask. Your skin might be a little sensitive after exfoliating, so choose something natural and gentle. The Cosrx Ultimate Moisturizing Honey Overnight Face Mask is a great choice for dry skin whilst the Vichy Clarifying Charcoal Mask works wonders for oily or acne-prone skin.

Step 3 – Moisturize

Finally, finish the process with your most luxurious moisturizer to lock in all of the glowy goodness. Here are my current favorite products:

Make sure to patch test your product 24 hours before use and throw on a new pillowcase before you go to bed. You don’t want a clean new face lying on a dirty pillow!

Self Tanners

I don’t know about you but a good tan always brightens my mood and boosts my self confidence.  I think we all crave that gorgeous golden glow to make it look like we’ve just returned from an exotic vacation, but sadly sun exposure and tanning beds are terrible for our skin. It might not be possible to go get a spray tan right now, but there are still plenty of amazing self-tanners to help you achieve that at-home glow.

If you don’t have the confidence to go full-throttle on the fake tan, you could always start with a gradual tanning moisturizer instead. It will take a little longer to achieve your desired glow but these products are much more beginner-friendly. Here are my favorite self-tanners:

At-Home Lashes

Let’s talk lashes. It’s harder than ever to get a lash appointment these days but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out. There are a few different options for achieving a full lash look from home:

Magnetic Lashes

Magnetic strip lashes are a relatively new addition to the market. You apply a magnetic eyeliner and then pop strip lashes over the top. It takes a few tries to get used to applying the eyeliner but once you do, you’ll never go back to lash glue!

Individual Eyelash Extensions

If you’re looking for a semi-permanent solution, why not try DIY lash extensions?  Instead of going to your favorite salon, you can order adhesive and individual eyelashes and do it from home. I’ve been doing this recently and honestly, it’s a total game-changer. I may never go back to the salon!

Lash Growth Serums

Finally, if you’re more into the natural look, why not give your lashes a growth shot? Lash serums have also come a long way over the years and there are some amazing products out there that can take your lashes from zero to hero in just a few weeks. Here are my top picks for eyelash growth serums:

Nails

When it comes to at-home beauty treatments, nails are an absolute must. A lot of us are missing our bi-monthly manicures, but that doesn’t mean we can’t achieve fabulous fingertips at home.

When quarantine orders were first put into place I saw a lot of people on social media attempting DIY gel and dip nails. Some results were hilarious, but others had a real talent for it. I decided to put myself to the test to see which nail treatments I could manage at home during quarantine.

DIY Gel Nails

Gel nails are the easiest type to do at home. It’s not too different from painting your nails, but you’ve got to dry them under a UV lamp. You’ll need to do several coats, so it takes a little patience but the process is pretty simple overall. Here are my favorite home gel nail kits:

At-Home Acrylic Nails

For those who aren’t willing to give up their fabulous talons, it’s also possible to do acrylic nails at home. If you can master the art of an at-home acrylic manicure, you’ll save yourself some serious money over time. As with most things, learning to do your own acrylic nails simply takes practice – and it’s definitely worth it. Here are my favorite home acrylic nail kits.

Dip Nails

If you’re feeling up to it, you can attempt dip nails from home. I say attempt because I have seen some pretty hilarious home dip nails results. Achieving smooth dip nails at home is most definitely an art form, but if you find you’ve got a talent for manicures then it’s worth giving it a go. Here are the best home dip nail kits.

At-Home Teeth Whitening

Chasing that Hollywood style? It’s difficult to get to the dentist right now but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on those pearly whites.

Of course, when it comes to whitening, I’d definitely recommend seeking professional treatment but there are some great at-home alternatives available for when that’s just not possible.
