A diverse cultural melting pot, South Africa, also referred to as the Rainbow Nation, is fast turning into the adventure capital of the world. From its breathtaking landscapes to vibrant cities, friendly people, and fun-to-explore mountains and caves, there are endless things to do in South Africa for all kinds of travelers.

So now that you’ve arrived in the land of safaris, check out these top 10 things to do in South Africa and have a thrilling experience.

1. ‘Dock’ yourself at the beautiful port city of Cape Town

Cape Town has a Mediterranean-like climate. It is the perfect destination for a beach holiday. Take a helicopter ride of Cape Town and satisfy your shutter bug addiction. The panoramic and to-die-for views include Camps Bay, V&A Waterfront, Table Mountain, and the never-ending beaches stretching along the coastline.

You can also enjoy an exhilarating ride to Table Mountain in a cable car. Don’t forget to check out the colorful areas of Bo Kaap that lie on the slopes of Signal Hill.

2. Spot the Big 5 at Kruger National Park

South Africa’s world-famous safari destination is waiting for you to explore its vast landscapes and spectacular wildlife. Your Kruger National Park safari takes you on a journey to discover unique wildlife and find Africa’s Big Five — lion, buffalo, elephant, rhino, and leopard.

For a more ‘authentic’ wilderness experience, try the Sabi Sand, Manyeleti, Timbavati, Klaserie, and Balule. These are unfenced and allow free and unhindered movement of wildlife. Camp Shonga, Rhino Post, Imbali Safari Lodge, or Jock Safari Lodge, are good choices if you’re looking for luxury.

3. Get a history lesson at Blyde River Canyon

Explore the many treasures of the Blyde River Canyon, the only true canyon in South Africa and the largest Green Canyon in the world. It is spread over an area of approximately 26 kms and is over 800 meters deep.

Where the Blyde and Treur River meet, swirling pebbles have carved out enormous potholes. These magnificent rock features are also called ‘Bourke’s Luck Potholes’.

Did you know Blyde River Canyon is accessible by road, water, and even air? Hike to the various viewpoints, take a boat trip, or fly yourself to the canyon in a Microlight or in a hot air balloon. Can it get more romantic than this?

4. You can’t go wrong with Camps Bay

Take in mesmerizing views of the ocean and the mountain both at once at Camps Bay. Experience the spectacular Twelve Apostles as you stroll along the Pipe Track to the ocean. Do trek to the tidal pool for beautiful views of the beach and the majestic Twelve Apostles.

Spend the breezy evenings at the African Craft Market. Stock up on beaded jewelry or leather items from this open-air bazaar.

5. Stir your wildlife senses at the Gondwana Game Reserve

If the words ‘stress-free getaway’ and ‘wild beauty’ have found a way into your itinerary, then a visit to Gondwana Game Reserve near Cape Town is a must. A mere 4-hr journey from the Cape Town International Airport, the 11000 hectare private game park is home to the Big Five.

At the lodge you’ll be spoilt for choice: wholesome African cuisine, top notch service, game drives, mountain biking, hikes, spa treatments, and more.

6. Picnic at Lion’s Head under the full moon

Hike to 699 meters above sea level right in the heart of Cape Town city. In case you were not aware, Lion’s Head is a mountain in Cape Town and is popular for its full moon hike. It’s high enough to surprise you with magnificent views of Robben Island. Named after the prominent rock, is LIONSROCK, a refuge and safe home for big cats in South Africa.

7. Wine tasting and winery tours through breathtaking vineyards

After all that hiking and safari, it’s time to taste some of the finest South African wines. Stellenbosch, a quaint little town, is the premier wine making region in all of Africa.

Once you’re in Constantia or in Stellenbosch you will not be able to resist tasting a glass or two. Relax in the town or just simply enjoy the scenery, while you indulge in the cheese boards and platters that they have to offer.

Sample a wide variety of red and white wines during your visit to the wine regions of Paarl and Franschoek, and revel in the lush mountains and rolling vineyards that surround you.

8. ‘Skinny’ dip with penguins

If you enjoyed watching the movie Penguins of Madagascar then you’ll sure want to schedule a visit to Boulders Beach, one of the two mainland African penguin colonies. Want to swim with the penguins? Yes, you can. There’s a beach further down the coast that lets you experience the cold water with the penguins.

9. Watch ancient nesting rituals of Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles

As you drive through the iSimangaliso Wetlands situated in the Elephant Coast, you peer hard to spot rhinos, hippos, and the world’s smallest lizard. But this region is also one of the best places in the world to spot Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles laying their eggs. The tour begins post dinner and lasts till the wee hours of the morning.

10. Go whale watching in Hermanus

For watching some of the world’s best land-based whales, head to the cliffs overlooking the bay in Hermanus. A seaside town only 2 hours drive from Cape Town, Hermanus is one of the top whale watching destinations in the world. Most whale sightings happen between June and November, but the months of September, October, and November are considered the best time to spot the whales.
