A MODERN GUIDE TO LIVING YOUR LIFE WELL

What You Need to Know about Botox

What You Need to Know about Botox

Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world. However, there’s a lot of misunderstanding around Botox and what it does and doesn’t do. And with so many anti-ageing treatments out there, it’s important to understand how it compares before making a decision. That’s why I’ve put together this informative, totally judgement-free guide to Botox so you can make an educated choice. Welcome to Botox 101.

What You Need to Know about Botox

What is Botox?

It’s a prescription medication that’s injected into the skin to smooth wrinkles and fine lines.

It works by relaxing (and paralyzing to some extent) muscles which reduces movement in your face, giving you smoother looking skin for up to four months at a time.

In addition to improving the appearance of wrinkles, Botox can be used to treat migraines and excessive sweating.

Isn’t It a Toxin?

Yes it is, but that doesn’t mean it’s unsafe.

Botox is a short for “Botulinum toxin”. It’s a protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. However, it doesn’t actually contain bacteria or viruses. The active ingredient works to relax muscles by blocking nerve impulses to them which stops movement in the treated area.

Botox is generally considered safer than more invasive cosmetic procedures, such as facelifts. There is also less pain and downtime afterwards.

Who Can Use It?

Many people can benefit from Botox, but it’s not for everyone and shouldn’t be used without medical supervision.

If you’re under 18 or pregnant, don’t use Botox on your face unless advised by a doctor. There are also several diseases that may prevent someone from using the medicine.

For example, if you have a neuromuscular condition or are suffering from an infection in the area it may not be safe.

Make sure your doctor or aesthetician is aware of any other medicine you’re taking and follow their advice to minimise risks.

What Results Can I Expect?

Botox can dramatically improve skin quality and reduce wrinkles for up to four months at a time.

There are several types of Botox, and each one works in different ways depending on the specific area being treated. For example, Dysport is designed for use around the forehead and eyes which need stronger doses than other areas like your neck or jaw line.

Botox can be used in conjunction with dermal fillers to treat very deep wrinkles, folds and creases.

How Does Botox Compare to Other Anti-Ageing Treatments?

The biggest difference is that you’ll see results right away. Other treatments, such as retinol or micro current facials, take longer to work. It won’t plump your face up as much as dermal fillers, although the two are often used together.

There is some evidence that Botox can improve collagen and elastin production, but that’s not its main purpose.

What About Preventative Botox?

Preventative Botox is used to prevent wrinkles from developing in the first place. Many men and women in their early twenties begin getting subtle Botox injections to prevent the formation of wrinkles. However, this is not something you should do without consulting a dermatologist.

Of course, there are also plenty of other ways to prevent the signs of ageing, including derma rolling, retinol and sun protection. Think of preventative Botox as a tool in your arsenal rather than the be-all-and-end-all of anti-ageing.

Does It Hurt?

Yes, but not as much as you might think.

The injection itself causes no pain and is similar to getting an injection at the doctors office. However, Botox may occasionally leave your muscles feeling a little sore for a few days after treatment.

No pain no gain, as they say.

What Are the Side Effects?

Botox has very few side effects and most are mild. They may include muscle pain or weakness in the treated area, and headache, dry mouth, irritation of the eyes if you’re being treated around your face and brows. However, these usually subside over the first few days after treatment. Most people don’t experience any side effects whatsoever!

Choosing the Right Provider

In many countries, Botox injections are largely unregulated. It’s important to choose a reputable provider who you trust to give the best advice. A registered doctor or nurse, or a medical aesthetician is your best bet. It’s always worth spending a little extra to visit a trusted provider. You don’t want to take any chances with your face!

After Care

You can go back to work immediately, but avoid strenuous activity for at least one day. You should also remain upright for at least four hours post-procedure – no laying down!

It’s also best to leave the area alone to avoid irritation or infection.

Skin Care Routine

You’ll get the best results out of your Botox injections by following a stellar skin care routine. I definitely recommend investing in a good anti-ageing moisturiser to preserve your results for as long as possible.

Botox is one of the most effective anti-wrinkle treatments out there. Choosing the right provider is important as they can help you understand what type of Botox will be best for your skin and facial features. They also know how to administer it in a way that minimizes risks, such as muscle pain or weakness.
