Italy is a luxury travelers’ paradise. This gorgeous country is a must for anyone who loves art, food, history, culture, fashion or beautiful visas… so basically, anyone with sense. There’s something so effortlessly glamorous about Italy. The buildings are so rustically beautiful, the landscape is so pretty and the people are so confident and self-possessed. Whatever the Italians do, they do it well (except, perhaps, driving, but that’s part of Italy’s charm!) Half of my family hails from Italy, so I may be a little biased here, but I truly believe that it’s one of the best luxury travel destinations in Europe and best of all, it’s opening up this summer! Here are the best luxury travel destinations in Italy so that you can start planning your trip.

Let’s start with the capital city of Rome. I’ll be honest, Rome actually isn’t my favorite European capital but you can hardly skip it! With its stunning historical monuments and world-famous artwork, there’s plenty of culture to soak up in the Eternal City. Don’t miss the obvious activities like exploring the Colosseum and visiting the Vatican (which is actually a country in its own right) but if you’ve got time, try to discover some of the capital’s hidden gems, too, such as Michaelangelo’s Moses and the quaint Piccola Londra neighborhood.
As for accommodation, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to luxury hotels in Rome. For a historic stay, opt for the Residenza Napoleone III where Emperor Napoleon III once lived, or you simply can’t go wrong with the glamorous Baglioni Hotel Regina on the Spanish Steps.
Ah, Capri. Laidback, artistic and whimsical, this beautiful Italian island oozes effortless style and class. It has long been a playground for the rich and famous, and its jaw dropping natural beauty has provided a muse for many great artists, musicians and thinkers. It’s also famous for its fine cuisine and world class shopping.
Unsurprisingly, there are many luxurious hotels in this beautiful destination but Jumeirah Capri Palace or Punta Tragara are probably my top two choices!
Fine art, gourmet food and world famous vineyards – what’s not to like about Tuscany? This region is the cultural capital of Italy but there’s plenty of natural beauty, too, including Giglio Island and Monte Capanne. Be sure to visit the region’s capital of Florence, too. This picturesque city was the birthplace of the Renaissance and is therefore home to many wonderful art galleries and some seriously impressive architecture.
For your time in Tuscany, I highly recommend a stay at the gorgeous Villa Cora. Located a little outside of the historical city centre, this property is the perfect place to cool down and relax after a long day of sightseeing.
Charming and romantic, Venice is often referred to as ‘the City of Love’ (along with Paris, of course.) You’ll fall in love with the city as you explore its winding alleyways and float along the canal whilst being serenaded in a gondola. Don’t miss St. Mark’s Basilica and make sure that you eat your bodyweight in pizza and ice cream – you can always burn it off by climbing the Campanile de San Marco afterwards.
As for luxury accommodation, the St. Regis Venice always delivers or enjoy the real royal treatment at the incredible Gritti Palace.
Milan is one of the fashion capitals of the world and is therefore a shopper’s paradise. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is the world’s oldest shopping mall and the Brera district has the best boutiques where you can find expertly tailored Italian garments. And of course, you have to visit Montenapoleone, the high fashion district where you’ll find designer shops and some of the best-dressed people you’ve ever seen.
Beyond that, Milan is home to some of the best gelato you’ll ever have and plenty of art and architecture. It’s a pleasure to wander around the quaint streets, or even rent a Vespa if you’re feeling brave! This photogenic city is a content creator’s dream.
The Mandarin Oriental is one of Milan’s standout properties, and the iconic Bulgari Hotel offers a next-level luxury experience.
This scenic 50km stretch of Italian coastline is densely populated with luxury hotels, upscale nightlife and Michelin star restaurants. It’s the perfect place to kick back, relax and treat yourself.
Sorrento is the first town you’ll likely come to and one of the most famous. It can be crowded during the summer season, but it’s a good starting point since it’s one of the coast’s more modern towns.
Foodies will find themselves at home in the quaint town of Sant’Agata.
Positano, meanwhile, is famous for its beautiful views, pastel buildings and exclusive nightlife. Bear in mind that it’s known as ‘the Vertical Town’, so you can be sure that your calves will get a good workout whilst you’re here.
And finally, of course, the eponymous Amalfi town is unmissable! The elegant Saint Caterina is one of the most beloved properties in Amalfi. It’s a 19th century Art Nouveau villa offering guests gorgeous views of the coast.
If you want to get lost in a fantasy land – and let’s be honest, who doesn’t after the year we’ve all had? – then the Italian Lakes is just what you need. You’ll find some of Italy’s most gorgeous natural scenery here, with clear water lakes, soaring mountains, lush vineyards and quaint little towns. It’s a pastoral daydream.
If you opt for Lake Como, arguably the most famous of the lakes, then stay in the Grand Hotel Tremezzo to experience a true Italian grand dame. On the other hand, if you prefer something more modern, the boutique Palazzo Albricci could be just what you need.
Sicily is a magical destination all year round, whether you want to sunbathe or ski. With beaches, mountains and active volcanoes, it’s perfect for any traveler who loves spending time outdoors. It’s also a perfect destination for foodies, since many of the finest Italian ingredients are produced in Sicily. Think almonds, olives, citrus fruits and wine. There are also plenty of historic towns, religious monuments and archeological sites to explore.
The Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo is one of Sicily’s most impressive luxury properties and it’s set in one of the region’s prettiest towns. When you stay here, you’ll also enjoy a clear view of Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe.
