Mexico is a tropical treasure trove, offering travelers amazing weather, vibrant culture and breathtaking scenery. It’s also an easy destination for US travelers to reach, particularly if you’re coming from the southern end of the country. Let’s take a look at the best reasons to visit Mexico as soon as you can.
One thing that really sets Mexico apart right now is the fact that it’s open to international tourists. Many countries have closed their borders thanks to the covid-19 pandemic or imposed quarantine requirements on visitors, but not Mexico.
The land border is between the USA and Mexico is closed right now, so you’ll have to fly in. Most people are able to enter Mexico visa-free, so long as you complete a tourist card. Right now, you don’t need a PCR test or have to quarantine. In terms of covid entry requirements, Mexico is definitely one of the easiest places to travel to right now.
With over 6,000 miles of coastline, Mexico is one of the best beach destinations in the world. Thanks to their azure waters, powdery white sand and vibrant marine life, Mexican beaches are a slice of pure paradise. Whether you want to lay on the pristine shores of Tulum, surf in Oaxaca or whale watch in Baja California, beach days in Mexico are what dreams are made of.
Your money will go a lot further in Mexico than it will in New York or Miami. It’s estimated that the cost of living is 2-3x higher in the US than it is in Mexico, so you can enjoy a luxury vacation for less by going south of the border.
One of the most popular reasons to visit Mexico is its status as an adventure sports mecca. Adrenaline junkies can try their hand at cave diving, glacier climbing, white water rafting and of course, a huge array of watersports. If you’re looking for an active and adventurous vacation, Mexico could be perfect for you.
Also known as ‘the Grand Canyon of Mexico,’ the Copper Canyon is a jaw-dropping series of six canyons. In fact, it’s four times longer than the Grand Canyon and arguably even more impressive. There are some wonderful, affordable and totally unforgettable tours available!
There’s no shortage of luxurious properties in Mexico, and many offer all-inclusive vacation packages to boot. The Only & Only Palmilla is a well-known celebrity vacation hotspot, whilst Maroma Resort & Spa offers guests unparalleled luxury. If you’re looking for a wellness escape, the Amansala Resort is one of the country’s top choices.
You don’t need to understand the rules of lucha libre to enjoy the spectacle of Mexican wrestling shows. There’s always a good atmosphere and you quickly find yourself being swept along on the wave of the crowd’s enthusiasm. If you’ve ever been to a muay thai fight in Thailand, you’ll probably enjoy this, too.
Mexico is home to over 70 national parks, so if you love exploring out in the natural world then you’re bound to enjoy your visit. Explore the enormous caves at Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, marvel at the jaw-dropping Basaseachic Falls in Chihuahua State or visit an inactive volcano in Nevado de Toluca.
Food is one of my favorite reasons to visit Mexico. Contrary to popular opinion, Mexican food is about so much more than tacos and fajitas; although, of course, they’re great too. Make sure to try chilaquiles, which are breakfast corn tortillas, and definitely grab some elote, or Mexican corn.
Mexico is one of the largest coffee producers in the world, and they know a thing or two about flavor. Mexican specialty coffee tends to be sweet and rich, and is often prepared with cinnamon or sometimes even a splash of liquor!
